Relational Psychodynamic Therapy — Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center, NYC

Emily Feigenberg,
LCSW, LICSW

My work as a therapist focuses on how we relate to others and ourselves — shaped by personal history and identities such as race, gender, sexuality, and class.

I welcome individuals and couples seeking relief from shame, clarity in ambivalence, and meaningful change. I take a psychodynamic, relational approach to treatment. I will compassionately guide you to identify areas of uncertainty and work with you to explore difficult patterns causing disconnection in your life.

My goal is to help you deepen self-awareness so that real connection outside the therapy room becomes more possible and more fulfilling. My style is collaborative, authentic, warm, and compassionately confrontational. Bearing witness to transformative change in clients’ lives is the greatest honor of this work.

Before private practice, I worked as a caseworker in a community support program, as a coordinator for a youth mentoring program, provided individual psychotherapy with young adults with intellectual disabilities through a Jewish organization in Brookline, MA, worked with individuals with both chronic and acute trauma at the Cambridge Health Alliance, and as a therapist at the Epilepsy Institute in NYC, where I worked with individuals diagnosed with Epilepsy and started a program to treat individuals diagnosed with Psychogenic Seizures (PNES). I have been providing clinical supervision since 2023 and feel genuinely honored to support clinicians as they develop their own voice and approach in the work.

If an area of your life feels distressing, tender, or in transition — let’s explore it together.

Therapy Can Help You

Therapy is not only for moments of crisis. It is a space to slow down, look inward, and move toward a life that feels more like yours.

Understand patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and life choices

Explore how past experiences continue to shape your present

Develop deeper self-awareness and self-compassion

Make sense of overwhelming or confusing emotions

Feel more grounded, authentic, and connected to yourself

Improve the way you relate to others — with more clarity, honesty, and ease

Identify and shift patterns that no longer serve you

Strengthen your sense of agency and emotional resilience

Create space to process grief, loss, or unresolved experiences

Learn to tolerate and understand difficult feelings rather than pushing them away

Experience a consistent, supportive relationship where you can be seen and understood

Build trust — in yourself and in relationships

Move toward change that feels meaningful, lasting, and aligned with who you are

Services

I offer virtual therapy to adults in Massachusetts and New York. All sessions are held via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

01

Individual Therapy

At different points in life, things can feel heavy, uncertain, or overwhelming. I see therapy as a collaborative process, where we work together to deepen understanding, explore what’s getting in the way, and help you move forward in a way that feels more aligned and sustainable.

02

Couples Therapy

Working with couples around attachment, communication, and relational patterns. I help partners explore disconnection, rebuild understanding, and create more fulfilling connection with each other.

03

Perinatal Mental Health

Specialized support for the emotional complexities of fertility, pregnancy, and the postpartum period — a time of immense change that deserves thoughtful, informed care.

04

Coaching

Coaching offers a more structured, goal-oriented approach focused on practical change and forward movement. Sessions may include strategies, accountability, and exercises to apply between meetings.

05

Clinical Supervision

I provide clinical supervision to licensed clinicians and those working toward licensure, drawing on my experience as both a therapist and former community mental health professional.

A note on approach: I take a psychodynamic, relational lens to all of my work — attending to how your history, identities, and relational patterns shape your present experience. Therapy with me is collaborative, honest, and grounded in genuine care.

FAQs

Here are answers to questions I hear often. If yours isn’t here, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Are you accepting new clients? +
Yes, I am currently accepting new individual and couples clients in Massachusetts and New York. Please use the contact form or email me directly to inquire about availability.
Do you offer in-person sessions? +
At this time, I offer virtual sessions only via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Virtual therapy is available to anyone located in Massachusetts or New York.
How do I know if therapy is right for me? +
If an area of your life feels distressing, tender, or in transition — therapy may be a valuable resource. Whether your struggle has deep roots or is a temporary challenge, whether you are in crisis or looking to deepen self-awareness, therapy can be the journey that both repairs and enlightens.
What does a consult call look like? +
A free, brief approximately 15-minute call where I’ll ask about what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping to work on. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask me questions and get a feel for how I work. Think of it as a “meet-and-greet” — we’ll cover logistics (insurance, scheduling) and therapeutic approach, and figure out together whether we’re a good fit. There’s no pressure.
What does a first session look like? +
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I’ll ask more questions than usual as I assess what brings you to therapy, your history (including family history, relationships, work/education, and medical history) and further elaborate on what you are hoping to work on. Some feel tired, drained, or emotional after the first session, as it involves significant information sharing which can stir up emotions — scheduling a quiet, relaxing activity afterward is often a useful thing to consider.
Who do you work with? +
I work with adults of all backgrounds, including individuals and couples, and those navigating the perinatal period (fertility, pregnancy, postpartum). My work is identity-affirming and attentive to how race, gender, sexuality, and class shape our inner and relational lives.
What is a superbill and how does it work? +
A superbill is a detailed receipt I provide after each session that you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. How much you get back depends on your individual plan. I recommend calling your insurer before we begin to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits and their reimbursement process.
How long does therapy take? +
The length of therapy varies depending on what you’re working on and what you hope to get out of it. Some clients come for a focused period of a few months; others find ongoing therapy valuable over several years. We’ll talk regularly about how things are going and whether the frequency and duration of our work still makes sense for you.
